BORN 1984, TORONTO, ONTARIO

Johnny Hockin

Inventor-storyteller shipping films and code fast.

I run Juniper Island, a production company that makes things move - commercial films, social content, brand stories that don't feel like ads. I also build tools for filmmakers because I need them to exist. Writing code with AI because waiting for someone else to build these tools takes too long.

Currently: Building a suite of filmmaker tools that cost $0 instead of $299. Directing commercial projects for brands like Subway, CBC, and Olympus. Testing whether AI can make me a better programmer than programmer.

Previously: Won a Gemini at MTV for Best Talk Series. Spent years at Red Bull Music Academy documenting music culture worldwide. Produced viral fan films (5M+ views). Created audio installations for Nuit Blanche. Interviewed everyone from Erykah Badu to John Carpenter during 4 years hosting MTV Movie Night.

The work is about removing friction between idea and execution. Whether that's extracting stills without opening Premiere, transferring footage without a Hedge subscription, or making a commercial that people actually want to watch.

Started at CBC Radio in high school. Studied film at TMU (formerly Ryerson). Learned the rest by doing.

Based in Toronto. Sony FX6 in the closet. Keyboard always warm.

How it started: MTV, RBMA, Gemini Award.
How it's going: Filmmaker tools, AI collaborator, Juniper Island.
